Community in Action

By Laken Hoody

On top of a rampaging pandemic that has already drained state resources and emotional well-being, Midland, Michigan and surrounding communities were hit with a 500-year flood that swept through on May 19 and 20, leaving thousands of residents of the mid-Michigan area to pick up the pieces.

Property owners in the Midland area say they’re facing extensive repair costs without insurance money to fall back on. An utter disaster has struck in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and no one will help, not the moment the first dam broke free and not even now, half a year after the fact. It seems that 2020 is just a never-ending catastrophe that enjoys one-upping itself every other week.

When a community is knocked to its knees, it fuels a fire within it to pick itself back up, and that’s exactly what Midland, Gladwin, and Saginaw County did and are still doing. Fundraisers, food and donation drives, and yard sales with proceeds going to the victims of the flood are just a few of the events the community has put on in order to get one another back up on their feet. These counties have formed a community and are determined to get through this, motivated by the lack of sympathy of insurance companies/the government/etc. and fueled by a passion for making their towns, homes, and neighbors whole once again.
